The Storyopen UrbanPod 18 Compact Urban Mobile Home is Storyopen’s solution to the urban density challenge — a precision-engineered 18-square-metre residential unit designed for deployment in backland plots, rooftop installations, garden annexe positions, and urban infill sites where structural weight limits, access constraints, and planning sensitivity make conventional construction unviable and standard mobile home designs over-sized or aesthetically inappropriate. The UrbanPod 18 is built to perform in the tightest urban conditions without compromising on residential quality, thermal performance, or the design character that planning-sensitive environments demand.
The structural frame is a lightweight steel space frame weighing 2,800kg in fully fitted configuration — a self-weight specification that falls within standard rooftop structural load ratings for most commercial and residential buildings built after 1970, enabling rooftop placement without structural engineering intervention on qualifying buildings. The external cladding system is a ventilated rain-screen facade in anthracite grey composite panels that deliver a contemporary architectural aesthetic consistent with urban design guidance in most UK local authority areas. The compact floor plan maximises every available square metre through a fitted sleeping platform with under-bed storage, a galley kitchen with induction hob and compact refrigerator, a wet room with shower and WC, and a flexible living area convertible between work and relaxation configurations.
The thermal performance system — 100mm SIP panels with triple-glazed sky-view rooflights — achieves a whole-unit heat loss coefficient that supports comfortable occupancy in all UK climate zones with a single 1kW electric panel heater as the primary heating source, minimising ongoing energy costs in grid-connected deployments. The electrical system is pre-wired for 32A single-phase shore power with a compact consumer unit, smart meter interface, and EV charging outlet pre-installation provision. Urban site connectivity for water, drainage, and data is provided through a single 100mm duct sleeve in the chassis base plate.
Storyopen UrbanPod 18 is delivered by HIAB crane vehicle and positioned to within 5mm of specified placement coordinates by Storyopen’s specialist installation team. Full planning support documentation including structural calculations, energy performance certificates, and design and access statements is available from Storyopen’s in-house planning consultancy service.
